Claw Pumps

Principal of Operation

The Onion Equipments Claw is a vacuum or pressure pump operating on the rotary claw principle. The rotary claw principle is based on dry running, non contacting rotors. As the rotors rotate, a void is created on the inlet side of the pumping chamber pulling air inward. The trapped air is then pushed to the discharge side of the pumping chamber where it is first internally compressed then discharged. The standard Claw cannot be used to produce vacuum and pressure simultaneously. A Claw pump configured for vacuum operation will have the inlet port connected to the vacuum line, and the discharge port will be open to atmospheric pressure (through a silencer). A Claw pump configured for pressure operation will have the inlet port connected to the pressure line, and the inlet port will be open to atmospheric pressure (through a silencer and filter). Claw vacuum pumps have an ultimate pressure between 15 and 173 torr, depending on the model, and Claw pressure pumps have an ultimate pressure of 29.4 psig.

A small, fixed, gauged clearance is maintained between all of the moving parts in the pumping chambers. This means that there is no friction (no wear) in the pumping chamber and therefore no lubricant required in the pumping chamber. The wearing parts of the Claw are well isolated from the heat and contaminates usually found in pumping chamber. The wearing parts of the Claw primarily consist of bearings and gears which are thermally separated from the pumping chamber by a double endplate design with an atmospheric air space

Regenerative Blowers

Regenerative Blowers- Regenerative blowers are Vacuum pump for low vacuum levels of the soil vapor extraction applications. The blowers provide high performance efficiency and require virtually no maintenance. They are compact, simple machines that operate at low noise levels.

Principle of Operation- The impeller blade passes the inlet port drawing air or other air or gas into the blower. The impeller blades then, by centrifugal action accelerate the gas outward and forward into a side channel. In the side channel, this velocity is converted into pressure and is forced back towards the impeller blades. Here the air “regenerative “ principle takes effect. Each “regeneration” imparts more pressure to the air. This spiral path continues until the gas exits the discharge port The pressures or vacuum generated by the spinning, non-contacting, oil-free impellers are equal to or greater than those achieved by many larger multistage or positive displacement blowers. New break through regenerative technologies have allowed the blowers to reach vacuums and pressures of a positive displacement blower. The new blowers have vacuums between 1’HgV (14" WC) and 16” HgV (220”WC). Blower sizes range between 10 cfm and 1200 CFM. Noise levels with a regenerative blower are relatively low between 65-80 dBa depending on blower size.

Positive Displacement Blowers

Positive Displacement (PD) Blowers- are used communally in situations that required a vacuum greater then 6”Hg. Until recently the Regenerative blowers were only capable of up to 6”Hg. The PD blowers are efficient and by changing belt pulleys the RPM can be changed to allow for flexibility in the performance of the blower.

Principal of Operation
Two Figure-eight lobe impellers mounted on parallel shafts rotate in opposite directions. As each impeller passes the blower inlet, it traps a definite volume of air and carries it around the case to the blower outlet, where it is discharged. With constant speed operation, the displaced volume is essentially the same regardless of pressure temperature or barometric pressure. Timing gears control the relative position of the impellers to each other and maintain small but definite clearances. This allows operations without lubrication required. inside in the air casing.

Liquid Ring Vacuum Pumps

Liquid Ring Pumps-are used most commonly for dual phase extraction system or when high vacuum higher then 16” Hg is need during Vapor extraction. Liquid ring pumps are highly reliable because there is no metal to metal contact of parts inside the pump, it requires very little maintenance and enjoys extremely long service life. The systems run quietly with minimum heat build up.

Principle of Operations
Liquid ring pumps consist of a cylinder casing in which the rotor type impellers rotate eccentrically, moving the service liquid: this forms a liquid ring and is concentric to the pumps casing body. At the pumps inlet port, gas is drawn in and enclosed between the impeller vanes. Because of the progressive immersion of the vanes into the service liquid, the gas is forced into a reduced volume, or compressed. The gas, along with a small part of the service liquid , is discharged through the pumps outlet. The physical action of the service liquid as it advances and retreats from the root of the impeller, creates a pumping action which creates the flow and vacuum.

Onion Equipment Moisture Separators

Moisture separators remove process liquid prior it entering the vacuum pump, protecting the pump against corrosion of pump internals, or in the case oil sealed LRP protects the oil from water build up. Proper sizing of the separator is crucial to effective operation. The inlet of the separator should be sized so that the 5000 feet per minute or less. The tables below are examples of the sizes available.

Moisture Separators

Moisture separators are condensing vessels that separates extracted groundwater prior to entering the Vacuum Blower inlet. Our moisture

Separators are constructed with the following features:

  • Carbon steel vacuum rated air/water separator vessel with a minimum volume of 50 gallons
  • 98 percent liquid removal efficiency
  • 0-1200 ACFM inlet flow rate design
  • Clean out port, 6-inch or larger, and designed to allow for easy opening.
  • Flanged openings shall not be utilized. -

  • 4” Stainless Steel Float Ball

Moisture Separator Transfer Pumps.

Separators require a means to evacuate during the process. Drainage is accomplished with the use of pumps. OE uses centrifugal pumps for lower vacuums. OE uses Progressive cavity pumps for Higher vacuum removal. OE uses a Removable sight tube with typically have three float switches.

Centrifugal Pumps are used for system under 15”Hg. The flow ranges rang from less then 1 gpm to 100 gpm. Progressive cavity pumps are from less then 1 gpm to 50 gpm.
